Richard Bennett Photography

RICHARD BENNETT's love of bush walking and mountaineering in the rugged South West of Tasmania first led him into photography.

He built his amateur enthusiasm into a full-time, diverse photographic business based on his home, first at Geeveston in the Huon Valley and more recently at Kingston, nearer to Hobart.

The aerial photography of racing yachts began after he took a scenic flight over the 1974 Sydney-Hobart fleet off the Tasmanian coast, snapped a few frames and found they were in demand among the sailors.

Since then, he has photographed every yachting event calling at or passing by Tasmania, developing special flying and photographic techniques to capture the picture and a unique style.

A Richard Bennett picture is easy to identify because it is taken at low level and, almost invariably, it makes a statement not only about a yacht but the seascape around it or the coastline near it.

He puts back what he has received from others in his profession in his capacity as National President of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography and as a judge in the annual Australian Professional Photography awards.
