Mt William National Park
There are few places like Mt William. Here you can take an early morning walk on quiet beaches that are dazzling white, offset by a turquoise sea and delightfully shaped pink boulders. These beautiful rocks are granite which because of its high quartz content breaks down into very pure sand.
This makes the superb white beaches and lends the water its extraordinary colour through brilliant light reflection. The surrounding soils are impoverished and favoured by heath. On the beach you may see nothing but the footprints of Tasmanian Devils, wombats, echidnas or wallabies. It is a place that truly belongs to the wildlife - a haven for many species that elsewhere are under pressure from human settlement.
Mt William is a stronghold for the only large kangaroo in Tasmania known as the Forester Kangaroo. Their favoured habitat is dry open forest with natural grassy clearings. These animals help form a large general population of marsupials and combined with previous farming practices they maintain large areas of open 'lawn'. Their constant grazing keeps trees and shrubs from getting established.
Coastal heathlands and woodlands, which also dominate the park, contain hundreds of different plant species ,many of which flower colourfully in spring and summer. Many species of birds also love this place and the climate is the mildest in Tasmania. Enjoy the walks, the wildlife and the chance to unwind in this special place.
