South West National Park and World Heritage Area
South-West Tasmania is a region of extraordinary beauty -a World Heritage wilderness area that has a stunning diversity of landforms. It is a land scuptured by successive ice ages resulting in jagged peaks and jewel-like mountain lakes.
Its a land of mountains, drowned valleys and wild coastlines lashed by the Roaring Forties winds. Stormy seas have helped form remote beaches while the high rainfall has given rise to magnificent wild rivers that have carved straight through mountain ranges.
The forests and moorlands are fascinating in their botanical richness and contain many species endemic to Tasmania. This is the land of waterfalls, a variety of forest types and immense cave systems.
This was the home to ice-age man. It is essentially a 'wilderness' area that is sufficiently large and remote so the natural processes can continue has they always have, free from the influence of modern man and modern technology.
The more 'untouched' an area the more its wilderness values can be classified as 'core' wilderness. A fairly high proportion of this area would meet this definition.
