By virtue that Tasmania is an island about the same size as Switzerland, the Irish Republic and West Virginia, surrounded by sea, the climate is a maritime one, rarely extremely hot or extremely cold.
Tasmania is the smallest and most southerly of Australia's six states. It has a population of 480,000 and lies about 200km (124 miles) south of the state of Victoria.
Tasmania produces vegetation which is extremely diverse, from tall open eucalypt forest, alpine heathlands and large areas of cool temperate rainforests and moorlands.
More than 20% of Tasmania has been listed with UNESCO as World Heritage Area, and the state has a total of 15 National Parks, with "Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park" the most well known.
